Our class became interested in the story of Henry Phelan because his birthplace is on Lorna Phelan's farm ( a 6th class pupil ) and he has many relations in our school including one of our teachers Ms. Doran.
Thanks to Noreen & Pat Phelan we visited Henry's birthplace and also his burial place in Camross cemetery. We also made a replica model of the house.
We researched Henry's short life - story and tragic death and also examined the memorial on his burial place in St. Kavan's cemetery Camross. We became interested in the whole history of the Celtic Crosses, Celtic designs and old Irish writing.
We learned all about the history of An Garda Síochána and interviewed our local sergeant Brendan Fitzgerald.
Our project involved lots of work in English , SESE and Art and we worked very hard throughout November to get everything done in time for December 3rd which was the presentation day in the Education Centre.
On the day 7 pupils represented our class namely 'Lorna, Kate, Laura,Finn, Karla, Aoibheann & Finn and they had to explain all the different aspects of the project to two sets of judges.
Thankfully our hard work paid off and we were delighted to be awarded 1st prize in the primary school section.
Well done to everyone involved !!
